Swinging

Behold, the thing of beauty.

Several months ago, Wes and I started talking about a swing set for the kids in the backyard.  (Who are we kidding -- a swing set for me in the backyard.  Both to swing on myself and to soothe otherwise fussy children.)  We have enough room for it, and the kids love to go to the park.  Plus with three kids, it's often hard to get them all on the swings at the same time.  We visited a play set store that's at the back of a baby boutique in Franklin, but the sets were very expensive, and in what I imagine will be words repeated throughout the years, Wes said, "I can build that."

And he was right.  He could.  It just took awhile since he had to do it in free time and good weather.  He got the basic structure put up when his dad was here with the big beams and the cement for the three main posts.  He added the angled supports, the swings themselves, and some additional support pieces as he went.  It was fully operational last Saturday for Oliver's birthday party, but we got some better connector clips and another toddler swing (Emme can use the big kid swing but can go higher and is certainly safer in a toddler swing still) later this week.  Wes still has to stain it, but otherwise, this is what we'll have.

We had initially wanted to have four swings (who are we kidding -- I wanted to make sure we had four swings) in case we add the "one more child" that still gets references around here.  I wanted all of the kids to be able to swing at the same time.  But a longer beam would have meant more structural issues and a post in the middle, so Wes did this.  He did the "add on" to the left that we can actually have four swings up if we want -- a toddler swing would fit perfectly there and doesn't need the 12-foot height of the others that lets them go so high -- but meanwhile we have the three plus a fun trapeze for us to play on (read: me and Wes).

I can say that thus far, this is one of the best decisions we've made at this house.  (Okay, maybe replacing the molding dishwasher was the best, but that was also pretty clearcut.)  All of the kids, but especially the girls, LOVE to swing.  They cry to get in, the cry when they're taken out.  I've seen Emmeline, half asleep, still in a swing after more than an hour.  She just seems very at home there.  Both the girls giggle and squeal when we push them high.  And Oliver has discovered the fun in laying on a swing on his belly and twisting it up and letting it untwist with him on it.  But most importantly, I love it.  When I've pushed the kids over and over again, and Oliver has moved on to play light sabers with a tree or do a routine that vaguely resembles rhythmic gymnastics with foliage involved, I climb on, pump myself higher and higher (hoping no one toddler nearby), and learn back to look up in the trees.  Bliss.

Zoo time

Wes, Oliver, and I decided to make use of our family membership to the zoo this weekend. Wes is celebrating being done with classes for his MPH and home from a recent conference in Washington, DC. This is the first in many weekends that he was really free to enjoy himself and spend time with us, and while I had some work to get done, none of it was imminently due. So off we went to spend some time at the zoo.

I knew one thing Wes would love would be the Jungle Gym at the zoo, a 66,000 square foot playground of sorts. There is a tot area, with everything padded for play, but with Wes around, I knew Oliver would be off to bigger and better things. The place really is amazing. There are slides and tunnels and rope climbs and all sorts of things. Ollie tried climbing the rope ladders with Wes but found it pretty challenging. He really liked climbing up and down the stairs that twisted throughout the tree house of sorts. Wes took him down the BIG and LONG slide, as Oliver was clearly not old enough to go down it himself.

We did enjoy other parts of the zoo as well. We revisited Lorikeet Landing, saw the giraffes, and went by the petting zoo before heading home. We also went to the amphibian and reptile house, which we did not visit last time, as Wes is a big snake fan. I didn't really like it, but there were two really pretty stingrays.

I think Ollie might be heading back to the zoo with my sister and mom, who are coming later this week to take care of him while Wes and I travel. But frankly, I don't think he'll mind.

Play date

This morning, Oliver and I met a classmate, his wife, and their daughter at an indoor play area called The Monkey's Treehouse.  The place is fantastic.  It has a huge treehouse-like structure with twisty, tube slides, drawbridge crossings, climbing nets, and little rooms with windows.  The posts of the treehouse look like actual trees!  There's a center sandbox, but instead of sand, it's ground-up rubber pieces, with a wheelbarrow and shovels.  Ollie really liked that part and spend most of his time in the pit with a shovel in hand.  He was not happy about having to let go of the shovel when he got out of the pit. There's an under-2 area with big Legos, a ball pit, a small slide (that Oliver went down probably 30 times while we were there), and a soft tunnel.  There were dollhouses, an area for arts and crafts, a grocery store with shopping cart, and lots of other small activities.  We were there with the kids for probably 2 1/2 hours, talking while they played.  Oliver was much more reticent to try things out than he is elsewhere, but that seems to be the way he is in new situations and with new people.  He warms up and jumps in eventually, but it's a process.  The place did get really busy by the time we left, and it was mostly bigger kids who were not always being well-supervised by their parents, but for $7.00 it was a lot of fun.  I would definitely take him back, preferably with Wes so we could help him more on things like the slide (hard to do with one person).  It's not worth the money to go all the time, but it's a fun treat and nice option, especially for rainy days.  Ollie was exhausted by the time we left.  As I predicted, he fell asleep on the car ride home but woke up to eat lunch and run around the yard in the nice weather for a bit.  I put him down for a nap 20 minutes ago, but he's still upstairs chatting.  Hopefully he'll give in and get some sleep soon.

We will get to see our playdate pals again tonight.  We've made a trade-off deal, so Vivi (their daughter) is going to spend some time with us tonight while they go out to dinner.  The kids are maybe 8 months or less apart, so while they can't do a lot together, it's also pretty easy to have both.  Plus, it's free babysitting!

Cannonball!

Or at least that's what Wes calls it. Oliver can swing sitting back, but if he gets tipped forward he can't right himself. He does enjoy the swing now, though. He giggles when he starts swinging, in fact. We've started taking him to the park occassionally on the way home from work/school/daycare. This is at a park near campus. It has a huge ceramic tile dragon that's phenominal, but it doesn't really interest him yet. He likes the teeter-totter (which is such that we can all three go on it), the swings, and the tunnels. He'll go down the slide with me, but it doesn't seem to excite him much yet.

5 reasons I love my Aunt Laura

1. She reads to me -- from children's books and graduate program textbooks alike. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the disparity of educational experiences among students of different socioeconomic classes. Highly edifying.
2. She pushes me on the swings -- which I'm still not sold on -- and takes me down the slide -- cause I'm not big enough to go on my own yet.
3. She takes naps, too.
4. She eats soft foods from cyclindrical containers with a spoon, too.
5. She came all the way from Savannah JUST to see me.
