Oliver's fashion diary (Sunday and Thursday)

He has three of these laminated shirts
with labels:tractor, cement mixer,
and alligator.
Wes and I both tried to talk him out
of the black socks and shoes, but
at the end of the day (or actually the
beginning), I don't think it's worth
fighting over.

Drying out

I think we may be making some progress with Oliver in terms of nighttime potty training.  He's been dry during the day, and even naps, since just before Emmeline was born.  It was great timing, and once he started wearing underwear, he pretty rarely had an accident.  (He came home from daycare in different shorts one day last week, and when I asked how he had an accident, it was revealed: he had tried to pee in the toilet standing up.  Evidently, he's been studying Wes in the bathroom.)  Nighttime was a different story though.  He was always wet in the morning, usually having pooped as well as peed in the pull-up.  I didn't know what to do about it.  When I talked to our pediatrician about it at his three-year well-child visit, she pretty much said it was developmental, and like daytime potty-training, some kids did it earlier than others.  So I let it go.

But then one week we had to wash the sheets several times because the pull-up was so overwhelmed with pee that it leaked.  Not fun.  We kept telling Ollie that he could get up at night and go pee in the toilet if he needed to, or at least in the morning when he woke up, but he never did (even though he would do it at nap time).  He's a really active kid, so I'm not keen on cutting him off from drinking.  He gets either watered down juice or plain water, so it's not like he's chugging down milk or something else. I figure if he's drinking, he's thirsty.

Last week, I decided to try something new.  Oliver usually goes to bed between 7 and 8pm.  Wes and I usually go to bed between 10 and 11pm.  So now, just before we go to bed, one of us goes up, picks him up out of bed, and sits him on the toilet.  Most night he pees (and not a little).  The first night we did this, he woke up with a slightly damp pull-up.  The last two nights, though, he's been completely dry.  He doesn't always seem to remember even getting up at night, so he's really proud of himself for being dry.

So imagine our excitement when this morning, around 6:45, Wes and I heard him leave his room and get on the toilet to pee.  We actually high-fived each other in bed, and then went up to make a big fuss about what a good job he did getting up to pee in the toilet.

I think my plan right now is to give this a try for several weeks.  If we get into a spell of dry pull-ups, we can try to drop the late-night potty trip to see if he learns to get up himself when he needs to go.  I'm not starting him in underwear until we've had a solid run of dry nights, but I'm hoping we can get there by summer.  Costco will be disappointed to hear we're close to being done, but I, for one, will not!

Size-ist, and the flirt

Emme and I went to the mall Saturday afternoon to possibly get her a new pair of shoes.  Her toes seem to be at the end of her current shoes -- not pushing on the end, but definitely close.  I had planned to take her to Stride Rite, where I get most of the kids' shoes, but it was nuts, and we ended up choosing a pair from Nordstrom's (pricey in general, but the shoes are comparable to Stride Rite).  Before we even left for the mall, though, I thought to check the "coats and shoes"bin in the storage area. I figured she could maybe wear -- or at least have as a spare -- Oliver's old shoes.  His shoes usually don't make it to the shoe bin anymore, as they're filthy and worn out by the time he's done with them, but his first few pairs were in good enough condition to save.  So I found his first pair of shoes -- the ones I bought when he was just a year, and I had to get them because he needed a pair of real rubber-bottomed shoes for daycare, even though he was still two months from walking.  The problem: while Emme is currently wearing a 3.5 or maybe a 4 at 14 months, Oliver's first pair of shoes were a 6.

And while we're on the subject of Emme, she's developed a new skill.  Wes and I are kiss-on-the-mouth people.  We kiss our kids on the cheek, too, and zerbert their bellies, but we give kisses on the mouth.  Up until now, Emme was satisfied to receive them but didn't participate much.  She had learned at school to blow kisses, and if you asked her to give someone a kiss, she would do that.  I guess she's finally been socialized to home now, though.  If you ask her for a kiss, she leans her head and looks for your lips.  Sometimes she gives slobbery open-mouthed ones, so you have to watch out.  When I dropped her off at school today, her teacher told me that on Friday, Emme had been so kind as to give one her classmates two kisses -- on the mouth.  I'm not sure I'm ready for all that.

Quoth the Oliver, Part III

Oliver has made a variety of self discoveries recently:

On finding bits of brown sugar left on the counter while making chocolate chip cookies: "I like sugar."

On siblings: "Mommy, when Emme and me get big, I think I'm all done with sisters."  He has said that he is not all done with brothers and would like one very much.  There did seem to be some connection between not wanting another sister and the fact that Emme cries sometimes.

On his musical pants:

Oliver, walking into the grocery store this morning: "Mom, my britches are falling down."

Me, laughing a little: "Your britches are falling down?"

Oliver: "Yeah.  Mom, do you know 'London bride is falling down'?"
